Re: Odyssey

Date: December 12, 2006

On behalf of the young adults, we are proud to introduce a new program to honor the elders in our congregation.  It is entitled Odyssey. As you know the term odyssey refers to a long and eventful journey and is attributed to Homer’s Greek epic poem that describes the journey of Odysseus after the fall of Troy.

The purpose of our Odyssey program is three fold: (1) to invite our elders to tell stories about their lives and to share memories of the congregation; (2) to archive these stories through a digital oral history project; and (3) to stimulate dialogue among and between generations.

Starting February 2007 we will host an Odyssey at 1:00 pm on the first Sunday of each month, beginning with the eldest member of our congregation.  Each Odyssey will be digitally recorded and available on Compact Disk and PodCasted on the church website and available through iTunes.  This will ensure that these stories will be available to every member of our congregation, especially for our youth and young adults.

Attention Elders:
If you are 70+ years old and would like to participate in this Odyssey series, please contact me at (917) 922-2287. I will need to know your date of birth so that we can arrange the series in chronological order: the eldest will be first.

Odyssey Reception
Please contact me if you are a young- or middle-aged adult who would like to sponsor an Odyssey Reception. The purpose is to provide home hospitality for our Odyssey presenters and their special guests.
