Welcome Message from Rev. Susan Karlson Welcome to the Unitarian Church of Staten Island. Here you will find a church that inspires and invites the heart, mind, body and spirit to fully engage in the world while encouraging spiritual growth and personal transformation at the same time. Unitarian Universalism is not a new faith - since the first century of Christianity, people have aspired to freedom of thought and religious views that broke the mold of religious ideas carved in stone. We count those free thinkers and heretics as our ancestors. The underpinnings of the Unitarians and Universalists formed separately in Europe as far back as the 15th and 16th century. Many lost their lives for expressing their beliefs. Their courage and conviction shaped Christianity and led to both Unitarians and Universalists crossing the ocean and beginning anew in the United States. Both faiths developed separately, but had such strong links that they finally merged in 1961. The Unitarian Church of Staten Island has its own rich history that dates back to its founding in 1852. Check out our History web page for more information. I am delighted to be the minister at this beautiful church and I want to extend a personal welcome to come and join us here for services, events, programs and religious education. Since I am newly arrived as of September 1, 2008, we are still developing the full calendar of events this year. But this church has always been active in the community, and we welcome you to come and see if this church, in the fastest growing borough of New York City, might be a community that answers some of your deepest spiritual needs, and provides a place where you can work to transform the world and yourself at the same time. Please check us out and introduce yourself to me. I'll be glad to meet you and hear about your spiritual journey and how this Unitarian Universalist congregation might be a good fit for you. Faithfully yours, Rev. Susan Karlson |
